My sister Laura holds her cat “Princess”
As her long dark hair tresses
Falls to touch the cat’s dark fur
Just as the cat begins to purr
Where does her hair end
And the cat’s fur begin
Busy work of her day
Forgotten for a stay
Laura and the cat sit as one
After the day’s chores are done
Gently petting the cat
Nestled peacefully in her lap
A moment still to adore
Each other’s love in awe
Yet whose love is more
Laura or her rescued pet
Forever in each other’s debt

MONDAY MORNING

It was a Monday morning. The sun shone on the entry gate of Farmingdale University. My twin sister and I came to attend classes. It was a time when we were young students living at home. Suddenly there’s a kitten. Nature cast the kitten abandon on a college campus. The stray blended in until she didn’t. The kitten’s gaze met with those languid yellow-green eyes held us spellbound. In stillness she sat upon grass glistening with morning dew cushioned by her short mangled fur.
The kitten steps from the shadow into the sunlight as if to meet us. This sweet creature has awaited her rescue long enough. The kitten’s rescuers have arrived as we gently picked her up to take home to our parents. For now it was enough to know the kitten will leave with us. From that moment on the kitten was on route to a new life.
It was to be a short drive home as my twin drove and the kitten sat on my lap. At once the kitten’s whirling mewo howling gave sudden cause to pull over. Upon stopping the kitten unexpectedly jumps down to meet the ground and politely “does her business.” With that complete, she promptly returns to my lap as we continue the ride home. Thus, this was to be a special cat with innate breeding.
This Monday the twins were bringing home another stray. For “the love of cats,” Mom pleaded “Don’t show her to me. I’ll fall in love. Find her another home.” Dad, although a cat lover too, passed verdict “It’s your Mother’s decision.” Alas, rejected we asked neighbors and friends in search of a home for the kitten. When no one could adopt her we felt our only recourse was to return her to college. Then Mom saw this adorable stray, and as she predicted, it was love at first sight. At last the kitten found her home and we found her name; “Monday” on that Monday morning.
As Monday grew with loving care she blossomed to be a glorious long hair beautiful Angora cat. True to her linkage of royal breeding, she was a class act. Over the snootiness by many a cat’s deceit, Monday was honest with her love. As they say, beautiful inside and out. A small bundle of fur greeting us at the door, friendly, obedient, and full of life – one was never alone when Monday was there. That ball of fur loving nature rubbing against your legs made her presence known. In the stillness of the night she purrs for a nights rest upon my bed. Monday was a joy to have around the house.
Years pass quickly as I came to marry and moved out with my husband. Monday stayed with my parent’s home – it was as much her home as theirs. Yet, Monday’s days were numbered stricken by cancer. Then on a bankrupt dark Monday morning, Monday passed away. Mondays will never be the same. A life that began that Monday morning has, alas come full circle to be Monday’s mourning.

My neighbors' dog, Izzy
Is making me dizzy
This feeling I never felt
Doggy love makes me melt
Near you all the time
I know you're not mine
Izzy jumps and greets
Everyone she meets
With pink cheeks kisses
I will be missing
Izzy's owners moving away
she will not be near one day
I cry and sing the blues
with the moving day news
Yet, Izzy can spread the cheer
To new neighbors near
kisses and joy that only she
gives to others in need like me
I'm getting dizzy

Awaken from the nightly slumber
Day of calendar’s peak of summer
Silence broken by cat’s sweet purr
From the warm ball of midnight fur
The sun rises to turn up the heat
Catlike grace uncurls to greet
Morning steps aside on this date
As the cat’s path follows his fate
From the family circle stay at home
Black Cat escapes in pursuit to roam
Restless hunter pounces in hike
As a car races by to strike
Heartache for my furry friend
Flashes of a pet’s life end
Heaven unrolls its Golden Fleece
For Black Cat to rest in peace

CAT’S PAWS
There on the edge of the window
My cat sits looking at the snow
Purring as the cat patiently stays
Content indoor for the snow day
The cat’s at home is satisfied
Away from the snow inside
Waiting for another day
Until the snow melts away
Passing time resting indoors
Curl inward the cat’s paws

Looking back to when
To stroll together again
It was Grandpa and me
Walking his dog,Brownie
From his back yard
To Francis Lewis Blvd
Sometimes we would meet
At White Castle to eat
Square burgers for us two
And Brownie liked them too
Many years has passed
Yet memories forever last
Walking Brownie with Grandpa
A granddaughter’s love travels far
To stroll together again
It was Grandpa and me

Blue Bird Watching
Days of burst of sun light
The focus seems just right
Stage for blue birds to sing
At this lovely season of spring
There a blue bird is seen
Among the leaves of green
Perched on a tree finding room
Where flower buds bloom
Blue bird on a branch await
For a graceful escape
As the blue bird flies away
To return another day

A CAT NAPS
Pensive mood
Cat’s solitude
Curled up suggest
Long for rest
Feline grace
A cat’s place
Soft purr
Escapes the fur
Cat’s love
Like no other
A day complete
For a cat asleep
Upon my lap
A cat naps

ROMAN CATS
Welcome to Rome
A cats’ home
Rome graces
Cats’ places
Time of mirth
Roman cats’ birth
Stray and forlorn
Cats are born
Tourists trap
Cats adapt
Ruins between
Cats are seen
They prance
Almost dance
Among parts
Of Rome’s arts
Woven into landscape
Cat’s escape
As Rome goes
Cats’ colony grows
Territory rights
Days and nights
Cat’s point of view
Do as the Romans do!

A STRAY CAT’S PATH
A stray cat’s homeless life
Living outdoors as wildlife
Mournful hunger grief
Suffering, crave relief
Wandering beggar’s need
Drawn to crave feed
Trekking on, searching along
Instinct, right or wrong
Daily struggles test
Survival of the fittest
Lost forsaken homelessness
Need a little tenderness
A stray cat’s dark plight
Wide hollow eyes shine light
Hear a cat’s walling cry
Please don’t pass me by
