READING THE VITAMIN BOTTLE ISN’T ENOUGH

Perhaps reading the calcium supplement label may not be enough. I question the benefits of calcium supplements rendered from my perspective looking back on a personal experience with calcium supplements.

Fed on the onslaught of varied women magazines and newspaper articles promoting calcium supplements incarnating that theme at the time for women I anatomically surmise the supplement was needed. (Given I was thin and petite fitting the prototype.)

Women magazine articles essay a kind of familiar that may exist amongst women to sell their products and apparently calcium supplements was yet another product to be sold to readers.  Although I was in very good health with no sign of a calcium deficient, alas, I brought into the calcium supplement craze looking for a situation.

Thus, I was taking calcium supplements believing everything I read. A routine annual physical exam proved otherwise. It was not in my plan to listen to a Doctor, however, upon my annual physical exam I did – given that the examination revealed an excessive calcium deposit in my blood count.

The physician confirmed the calcium excess was resultant due to the calcium supplements and he stated to cease the supplements immediately. By way of following Doctor’s orders I stopped taking the calcium supplements and my blood count resume to a perfect normal ideal consistency of calcium reading.

A Doctor’s exam gives precedence over self-diagnosis or what one may read in a magazine or news article.  A certain article should only be a prelude to invite and welcome a physician examination, not in lieu of. The new normal for me – no supplements unless prescribed by a Doctor.

To summarize reading a magazine or newspaper article is not a prescription and you should not diagnosis thyself. Alas, reading the vitamin bottle label isn’t enough.

AVON CALLING
Published; The Long Island Beacon

My first job as an Avon Lady in the summer I was 16 years old.

Accompanying me on my sales route was my partner and best friend, Margie. We embarked on a venture to infiltrate our idyllic suburban sales district with the intention to seek out the potential housewife-customer. Our motto: to beautify the neighborhood with the adornment of Avon products.

I learned quickly that some of the Avon products sold themselves, while others do not fare as well, and we were compelled to diligently persist to practice and test our inexperienced sales techniques. Those ranged from product boasting, offering free samples to the lavish, though sometimes insincere `compliment.

My girlfriend had experimented with various Avon products and aptly applied vivid color tones such as purple eye shadow, gold blush and tan lipstick giving her flawless, youthful beauty an intense, dramatic look; the kind of dramatic beauty only a flawless, youthful face could get away with.

One particularly reluctant customer looked over our merchandise and then, studiously studying my girlfriend’s face, inquired, "What are you wearing?"

We told her the combination of cosmetics Margie had applied and the woman quickly decided to buy them all. Our toughest sale of the day was made.

The Avon Lady knows  - you can't buy beauty but you can sell it.

KICK BACK CLOTHING
Published Long Story Short Magazine
Today there are no fashion rules – everyone seems to do their own thing. Essentially there really aren’t ‘fashion don’ts.’ Yet, if you ask my family they’ll say my white jumpsuit is a “fashion don’t.” In good old summer time my good old polyester white jumpsuit from 1998 comes out. You can hear my old sister taunt me; “I know it’s summer if Susan’s white jumpsuit is on. Must you wear it again?”
The polyester, washable white fabric of the jumpsuit has worn well without discoloration and has lasted all these years. And I can still fit into the junior jumpsuit from Rainbow store, which is good for my moral as I age. The jumpsuit is my go-to summer casual outfit for Saturday errands and summer fun at street fairs, parks picnics, and parades.
I tend to live in my “go-to kick back” one-piece white jumpsuit for the casual summer days and summer fun. Even us “Golden girls just want to have fun,” and wearing the jumpsuit is fun. I was never one to conform to fashion or follow the crowd; the jumpsuit suits me fine and I’m not going to start now at this age. The jumpsuit is an easy one piece, flattering monotone look for my petite size.
But the jumpsuit doesn’t suit my husband as he begs; “Can’t you wear pants and a top?” while he’s zipping my jumpsuit for me and giving in to me. My husband is inclined to give me my way “happy wife, happy life”.
My fashionable twin sister, wearing her red cashmere top and white size 4 pants, knocks me wearing my white jumpsuit again as she teases; “Only you and Elvis wear white jumpsuits…” Which seem especially appropriate the time we were watching an Elvis impersonator at a summer Massapequa Park fair and “Elvis”and I both wore our white jumpsuits. Unfortunately for my family, all their ribbing and badgering doesn’t stop me from wearing it.
Every summer when I reach into the back of the closet for that white jumpsuit I remember the good times I had wearing it. All clothes tell a story, and the jumpsuit has a lot to say. Alas, sometimes your mirror is in other people’s eyes, how others may see you, and I am concerned if I should stop wearing it–being guilty of the “Emperor Has No Clothes” complex. I wonder if what I wear may have nothing to do with the outfit at all. Rather, it has everything to do with the woman in the mirror – which begs to ask “mirror, mirror on the wall – do I look good after all?”

CLOTHES MAKE THE WOMAN

Today there are no fashion rules – everyone seems to do their own thing. Essentially there really aren’t ‘fashion don’ts.’

In my opinion clothes makes the woman. I have my own clothing style to fit my petite figure.  Every time I reach into the closet I choose clothes that accent or camouflage my figure and suit the occasion dressing the part. I consider dressing down a sign of disrespect. No torn jeans on this body. I tend to dress feminine and youthful seldom wearing man-tailored suits.  You don’t need to dress like a man to be equal.

I never was a fashion conformist barely knowing current trends or latest hip designers. I try to balance fashion clothes with my figure – my shape seems to shape the way I dress.  I dress in harmony with my body type which is a petite size 4.

The fashion statement you make dresses the real you – how you “look” is how you look at life. Sometimes your mirror is in other people’s eyes, how others may see you.  Yet, one may fear it may become “The Emperor Has No Clothes.”

Perhaps my youthful, feminine, and frankly “girlish” style wearing dresses and jumpsuits is my desire to dress the part to be pampered and spoiled by my husband – “girls just want to have fun.” Alas, I do have to admit that I may just be trying to masquerade as younger.

Communicating with color selects my choice, also.  I wear red on Christmas, while glitter is all aglow on New Year’s Eve.  I wear a pastel dress on Easter – the color of Easter eggs. Mother’s Day I often wear pink (was my mother’s favorite color.) I wear black when it’s befitting the serious occasion such as funerals. And white is pure and fresh for a summer day.

During the current summer season I tend to live in a one-piece white jumpsuit for the casual summer days and summer fun. My husband and my very upscale fashionable Dapper-Dan twin sister teases me when I wear it (“The white jumpsuit again? Only you and Elvis wear white jumpsuits.”) Unfortunately all the ribbing and banter doesn’t deter me from wearing it.

However, what I wear may have nothing to do with clothes at all.  Rather it has everything to do with the woman in the mirror – which begs to ask “mirror, mirror on the wall – do I look good after all?" by Susan Marie Davniero

FASHION WEEK RED DRESS SHOW

You gotta’ have heart – and Fashion Week’s Red Dress Show, has the heart to alert and invite women to join in the campaign sponsored by the National Heart Association to fight women’s heart cardiovascular disease.  The Red Dress Show attended by front row celebrities as reported lead the way women should go to evoke awareness.

Alas, men and women are equal in heart disease; yet not always equal in news media coverage. Thereby, coverage at Fashion Week in newspapers pages is needed to alert and enlighten women of impending heart disease.

Go women and heed to the National Heart Association healthy guidelines and check ups to ensure a healthy heart. Put your heart into a heart-healthy diet – if you got the heart to do it!

FASHION WEEK

Fashion week keeps us in stitches.

How sexist of newspapers to exclude men’s fashions during Fashion Week’s coverage amid the pictorial layout runway print pages.

After all, men have the same right to the evaluation, critique, and exploitation of their appearance as women do.

Susan Marie Davniero

GOODBYE MISS AMERICA

A passé sexist beauty pageant should be ignored; however, alas it is not. There is no need or reason to televised beauty pageants beyond the sexist theme.

Pageants incarnate the theme of competition amongst women played out to divide women’s solidarity.  Women should take their dignity back for no beauty contest shall defeat us. All women are winners. After all, life is not a beauty contest.

Each of us women exist independently of each other; yet co-exists interdependently.  Therefore, one woman may affect many.  Alas, all women pay the price for the crown of the shallow victory.

Irrespective of the trite news content merit beauty pageant coverage remains to be reported as news and televised.   However, due to faltering ratings, declining audiences and sponsors support, perhaps the beauty pageant is yesterday’s news and past its prime time.

THERE’S NO BUSINESS LIKE “SEW” BUSINESS

Fashion Week returns - there’s no business like sew business. Alas, we live in a material world. Fashion keeps us in stitches.

There are many faces of fashion; however, the only face shown on catwalks is the surreal runway youthful mannequin models.  Perhaps a cross section of people would be realistic proportional pattern cut to fit all people.

Essentially, you are what you wear from the trendsetters to the dress for success. Every time you reach into the closet, store rack or buy into fashion week you buy into your clothes image. Some want to masquerade as younger (girls just want to have fun.) Perhaps others communicate with color, glitter or style.

The fashion statement you make dresses the real you - how you look is how you look at life. Sometimes what you wear has nothing to do with clothes at all. Rather it has everything to do with the person in the mirror. Mirror, mirror on the wall - its fashion week after all and we just dress our part.

Forever fashion!

FASHION WEEK KEEPS US IN STITCHES

Fashion week keeps us in stitches.

How sexist the newspapers are to exclude men’s fashions and ban male fashion models during Fashion Week’s coverage pictorial layout runway pages. After all men have the same right to the evaluation and superficial critique of their appearance too as women do.

I do like fashions; however, newspapers and magazines hyped fashions are beyond my fashionable taste.  With all the coverage it begs to question if it’s a fashion industry insider unwritten rule to pay off the editors to promote the designer clothes – which is essentially fashion advertisements?

Irrespective of the diversity of women sizes and curvaceous silhouette the women department’s retail sizing is not up to the size of the men’s department’s free tailoring alterations and methodical systematic sizing of the male’s physique (even the neck size is given!) Alas, women and men are not fitted equally in the fashion industry.

Apparently the mature woman consumer is an untapped reservoir clothing market which is not dressed by fashion designer. Thereby the mature woman remains undress by the fashion industry if she is labeled invisible.

There’s no business like “sew” business. Essentially, the consumer may not be able to buy beauty, yet the fashion industry advertised promotional aim is to sell it.

THE MASK

I empathize with people’s quest for symmetrical perfection of cosmetic surgery to ensue an ageless body image. Perhaps, some people may be seeking a remedy for an insecure body image thru the charade of a surreal synthetic imagery.

However, in my opinion, the mask of cosmetic surgery worn does not conceal one’s flaws yet inadvertently flaunts them.

Cosmetic surgery cannot buy one beauty, yet given the financial profits of the lucrative plastic surgery industry – they can sell it.

Sincerely,

Susan Marie Davniero

SHE'S GOT THE LOOK

I applaud TV Land’s program “She’s Got the Look” promoting adult women models (pass 35) and including them on the runway.

The program is in recognition of the perpetual ageless beauty of women, and renounces the proclivity of a beauteous imagery exclusive only to youth. It is surreal when the image of beauty is only derived by youth. Given the beauty of the older women contestants in the program, beauty is defined at any age.

The program may inspire adult women to ascribe to an ageless visionary of her beauty; irrespective of the bias ageism in society, yet, not to any fault of her own.
However, until advertisers redefined the marketable consumer to include women of all ages, I fear programs such as, “She’s Got the Look” can only broadcast the women at all ages as models, yet, not really sell it.

Dress Code for Church

I thought I would “address” the Dress Code for Church attendance. Apparently it seems the faithful to be dressing down for service – which is “a fashion don’t.”

In my opinion, on Sunday we are visiting the House of God. The Lord is divinely hospitability welcoming all. Yet, as any invited quest we should dress the part with respect for the sacred occasion of Sunday’s Mass.

Sometimes what one wears have nothing to do with clothes at all. Rather it has everything to do with the person in the mirror. Some people may perceive a dress code as being judged by how they look and not by who they are inside. Mirror, mirror on the wall – doesn’t God love us all just the way we are.

That being said, Pastors may want to “address” the dress code situation by enlightening the congregation that we are in the House of God and should dress accordingly to respect our Divine Host. Perhaps by inviting the faithful to visit God’s House they would dress in their Sunday best.

THE PARTY ISN’T OVER

Perhaps the days are over to indulge in unhealthy lifestyles and to play diet roulette with yo-yo dieting games.  The by gone days of seesaw dieting, feast-to-famine gluttony and starving to absolve calorific intake to fit into the quintessential “little black dress” or forgiving jeans are essentially over at a certain age.  I learned that a healthy diet lifestyle is essential.

Essentially, you are what you eat. It is just not conceivably able to snap-back to shape after rotating days of splurging, gorging or starving and one cannot afford the price of smoking or drinking risking health.  Thus, the remedy to minimize and alleviate the signs of aging may begin with a healthy nutritious diet to fuel the journey in age and preserve health and good looks. Essentially diet

You should familiarize yourself with the introduction of healthy foods in the diet such as fruits, vegetables, grains, fish, tofu and soymilk, may monitor the digestion tract, metabolism and cholesterol. Sometimes difficult to eat right in a world that eats wrong, surely a sensible person can be entrusted to eat right.

Perhaps a vegetarian diet is a suitable option on the menu.  A plant-based diet is the healthier choice by way of health concerns in age, as vegetarianism may be in all our futures.  Studies indicate soy and tofu products may aid in the transition for the inevitable onset of menopause. Reportedly the right diet may nurture mid-agers in averting heart disease, high blood pressure and illness.

Yet no diet is intended to replace medical check-ups or prescribed medication.  There are no short cuts to good health, yet a healthy low-fat diet and exercise plan is on the road to good health. Essentially diet and exercise is the fountain of youth.

My plan has gone beyond words ascribing to my own strict vegetarian low-calorie healthy regimen to maintain my size 6 petite figure.  My diet consists of low-calorie foods, such as Tofu, soymilk vanilla, vegetables (starring broccoli and cauliflower). I suggest you find a friend or spouse to share a diet plan. There is a need to essay a familiarity that may exist in life’s path to take the road toward good health in age.

You should aim to switch over to a healthy diet- if you know what is good for you.  You do not have to love all the food that is good for you; yet you should love yourself enough to eat right.  The pandemonium of calorific gorging, junk food splurging, malnutrition, smoking or drinking excess should become a welcome lost of youth.  Age is really just a number after all. If you adopt a healthy diet, exercise plan and lifestyle you can party on. The party isn’t over yet!

Reader Mail

I suggest women reject the synthetic fabrication of plastic surgery, irrespective of the flaws Hollywood, media or society may critique, yet not to any fault of your own.

Essentially plastic surgery is false surreal caricature of the true beauty of womanhood and is not an answer to revert aging.

Apparently plastic surgery will not buy you beauty, however, evident in the profits of the lucrative plastic surgery industry, alas, you can sell it.

READER MAIL

The mornings are my most productive part of the day, the quiet time before the rest of the family (and the world) awakens.  This is my time to prepare for the day.

I have the silent time to read my morning newspaper, write my “to do list” for the day, prepare meals to reheat later and dress at leisure.

As a self proclaimed morning person the mornings are the best part of my day every day.  In the quiet peace of morning, my busy day begins with a fluster instead of a bang, no tasks seems too big and if something does not get done that day, tomorrow is another morning.

KICK BACK CLOTHES – IT’S MY WHITE JUMPSUIT AGAIN!

I tend to live in my “go-to kick back” one-piece white jumpsuit for the casual summer days and summer fun. Even us “Golden girls just want to have fun,” and wearing the jumpsuit is fun.

Every summer when I reach into the back of the closet for that white jumpsuit I remember the good times I had wearing it. All clothes tell a story and the jumpsuit has a lot to say. Maybe it also says a lot of my hanging onto to being young, trying to look young or being independent non-conforming. Yet, to me I just think it makes me look good.

Alas, sometimes your mirror is in other people’s eyes, how others may see you and I am concern if I should stop wearing it being guilty of the “Emperor Has No Clothes” complex. But than what would I wear instead - boring tops and pants that aren’t as flattering.

There are those days when the sun doesn’t shine and I question my outfit. I wonder if what I wear may have nothing to do with the outfit at all.  Rather it has everything to do with the woman in the mirror – which begs to ask “mirror, mirror on the wall – do I look good after all?"

MY SAVING TIPS

Sharing my ideas on saving money is living a simple life.  You may not have all that you want but you probably have all that you need.  There is a great peace in the comfort of choosing your own path in life, absent of false worship of material goods.  The best things in life are free after all.

Yet when things aren’t free a tip to get a better deal is to negotiate.  Ask for a manager with authority and bargain a price deal.  Most merchandise prices can fluctuate with range to discount.  Be courteous, yet confident and haggle over the price tag marked and negotiate to pay less or be given accessories at no charge.

Often merchants will match competitor’s sale prices (come prepared with advertised circulars of competitors) or even extend sale price. Ask for the sale price even if the item is not sale currently.  Ask and you shall receive.

Purchase floor models for reduced prices.  Consumers can also use delivery charges or extras as leverage when negotiating price on major appliances, electronics, televisions or furniture.

We do not live by bread alone. Become a frugal grocery shopper – buy store brand and eliminate high price convenience items. Be prepared with coupons, sale prices, double coupons and buy bulk when possible. Follow a game plan and avoid impulse spending. Buy produce at fruit stands. Be hungry for bargains.

Re-gift your unwanted new gifts as a gift for someone else’s special occasion. Ask store merchants for any mail-in rebate offers. (ex: Pep Boys oil change rebate)

To remove ink ballpoint stains use whitening toothpaste to dab a little on the stain and machine wash. Works every time – ink spots be gone.

Shop at dollar stores in the neighborhood for bargain discounts for everyday items. Visit new store openings for free give away promotions and door gifts.

Phone the toll-free 800# on most packaging and ask for courtesy coupons on their product. If you prefer their brand compliment the product.  Sometimes the manufacturer will mail you a coupon for a free product just for the compliment.

Be a library patron for the free computer/internet use when you take out books and movies. Also, inquire for the free tickets at the library for the free shows.

Be a savvy shopper! Where does all your money go? Perhaps with simplifying your lifestyle, organizing lists and negotiating prices you might know.  You’ll be glad you made room for savings - the price you pay is your own.

LIFE IS NOT A BEAUTY CONTEST

I have either the need or mind to learn of beauty pageantry.  Yet, the pageantry game continues. Frankly, in my opinion, out of date beauty pageants no longer fit. A passé sexist beauty contest ritual is so common it should be ignored. No audience, no show.

Essentially there really aren’t any winners in this contest – all women lose. The competition is an unnecessary insult played out to divide women’s unity.  A contest such as this will pit woman against women to further divide and conquer women.

Perhaps I repeat tired feminist complaints; however, it bears repeating if the beauty pageants continue - in doing so repetition is a common code of protest. Of course I need not convert the converted. I attempt to change the unchangeable, although it is not in their plan to listen to me. Alas, some things never change.

Irrespective of the news credence, beauty pageants coverage continues in the news media.  Alas, the passé beauty pageants may have endured time, transcend generations and persevered. Yet waning audience applause, tapering sponsors and plummeting televised ratings may suggest the pageant is yesterday’s news and perhaps past its prime time.

The beauty pageant parody plays so aptly into a women’s vanity in step to a parade of contestants whom seem to exist only to be seen. The message sent is without worth.  Thus, the contestant fall victim to a judge’s absurd evaluation. It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.

Each of us women exists independently of each other, yet co-exists interdependently with each other.  Therefore one woman may affect many. Although beauty pageants may generate profits; however, all women pay the price for the crown of the shallow victory. Frankly, no beauty contest shall defeat us.

Life is not a beauty contest after all.

Come Back to JC Penny
I can attest to J.C. Penny marketing hype telling shoppers to come back to JC Penny to see for themselves all the changes revolutionizing pricing and the overall transformation of their stores as truth in advertising.
I recently did go back to J.C. Penny and witness the clothing alterations (pun intended) of Lady/Junior Dresses Department. The prices have been lowered and the quality is higher – fashionable and classy dresses at a moderate cost with a lenient return policy. Clothes make the woman after all.
I invite shoppers to come back to JC Penny (if the change in the dress apparel department is any example of the upgrade you will be in for a welcome surprise.) This is not your mother’s J.C. Penny anymore. Essentially, J.C. Penny is no longer a “fashion don’t”.
