Newsday My Turn:
Stories of love straight from the heart
Newsday My Turn:
February 14, 2014
Susan and Robert Davniero of Lindenhurst married on July 1, 1979 -- five months after their mothers set them up on a blind date.
Blind dates really do work. Just ask my mother. Bob and his family shared a two-family house with my aunt and uncle's family. At a luncheon in February 1979 that both our mothers attended, the exchange of family photographs opened the conversation.
My plan was to go on one date to make Mom happy. I decided I wouldn't try to impress him; I would just be myself, as Mom always said I should be. The rest, as they say, is history. It was love at first sight! They always say you will know when the right one comes along. That night, I met "Mr. Right."
After a whirlwind romance, Bob suddenly proposed on the third date! Before I knew it, my father's dream of walking me down the aisle was coming true. Bob fit right in with the family, like the missing piece of a puzzle. When we visited my parents, he joined our family's love of poker games -- destiny was in the cards.
My husband was like the brother and son our family never had. He watched old movies with Dad and completed crossword puzzles with Mom during visits every Sunday. Who knew? Apparently, Mom did -- my mother, my matchmaker.

One night after Mother’s passing I had a comforting
dream when Mother gave me her heart. In my dream Mother was there. I told her
how much I loved her and she said “I know.” I knew then that a mother’s heart is
always there. My dream was poetic…

LOVE LETTERS
For Valentine’s Day love letters are a gift that keeps giving. As a recipient of love letters from my husband before we married I can attest to the love that can be sent thru the mail via love letters.
After years of marriage I can still recall the messages of heart my husband wrote loving before we married. Some times when I wonder if the romance has gone from our marriage, his letters reassure me of his true feelings which like his love letters are sometimes just stored away.
Love letters are a gift that lasts happily ever after. Perhaps, alas, love letters are a lost art – coming up next the email express.

THE NIGHT HE PROPOSED
Published The Pink Chameleon, Pancakes in Heaven
One of the happiest days of my life was the night my
husband-to-be, Bob, proposed marriage. Not only because he made me happy but
because he made my father happy, too.
Bob and I only dated a few weeks and Bob already proposed on the third date. I hesitated to tell my parents because it was so soon. That night I came home from my date with Bob. Arriving home, I walked passed my father as we exchange our good nights, as he sat at the dining room table waiting up for me, (as he often did) and proceeded to the bedroom.

Arriving home, I walked passed my father as we exchange our good nights, as he sat at the dining room table waiting up for me, (as he often did) and proceeded to the bedroom.
Reaching my bedroom upstairs that I shared with my twin sister,
Laura, of course I told Laura the big news. She insisted I tell the folks that
night and woke up the whole family. Laura was adamant and made a scene raising
her voice; "Tell them now! You have to tell them"
Everyone awoke, my older sister, Teresa, came to her bedroom door wrapped in her blanket, even the cats seemed curious. Dad, with Mom following, raced to the bottom of the stairs calling up; "What is it? What is wrong?" I meet their glares standing from the top of the stairs but said nothing. Laura persisted to make a scene repeating; "Tell them now! Tell them now!"

Suddenly Dad became alarm demanding; "If you don't tell me what it is now I'm coming up!" Apparently, that line still worked me (although I don't recall Dad ever really coming upstairs) as I agreed to tell him. "Alright I'll tell you." I paused while looking directly at Dad alone and spoke; "Bob asked me to marry him tonight." Dad froze, staring at me and spoke softly, almost afraid to ask; "What did you say?" I smiled as I replied; "I said yes."

It Was a Night To Remember
by Susan Marie Davniero
It was a night to remember –
a February night in 1979. I recall looking at the snow froze on the ground left
from last night’s snow fall wondering how roads will be for driving to my blind
date. I felt the chill of the winter evening as I left my parent’s house. I
drove to my mother’s friend, Gig’s house across town to meet her son, my blind
date.
Arriving at the two-story
white brick corner Colonial Cape his mother opens the front door – I wonder how
this blond comely woman was my Italian date’s mother? She steps aside to clear
my vision as I watch him rise tall from the kitchen chair turning to meet me.
Nice looking I sum up as his black eyes meet mine. I consider how everyone who
ever loved me from my father, mother, twin sister, Grandma, to Uncle Paulie;
all had dark eyes like him.
His name is Robert. I call
him Bob. His style seem simple and honest different from the others smooth
talkers I usually dated. At the movies plaza he takes my hand to lead me to my
seat in the dark theater to watch the new movie of the time “Superman” starring
Christopher Reeve.
After the movies we drive to
a local club sitting in a booth across from each other as we talked. I was
surprise how much I did talk given that I was usually very quiet on dates. I
was often told how quiet I was by my dates. I was overly shy and quiet on dates
- yet, this time with Bob I spoke my opinion. I was able to be myself.
It didn’t seem as cold on the
drive home.
Bob’s pursue me phoning the
next date to set our next date, mailing me love letters in between dates and
writing me a love poem. Bob’s letter writing, a simple act without cost seems
to be what really sold me on Bob. Unbeknownst to Bob I always loved letter
writing. I imagine there’s a connection between us.
Suddenly on the third date it
happens – the proposal. Bob presumes “I thought it was too early to ask you to
marry me…” I intercept with “As me.” He asks and the marriage plans go into
action. It’s all gears ahead arriving at the church for a July 1, 1979 wedding.
We exchanged vows July 1, 1979. Life would never be the same again. It was the
first day of the rest of my life.
Happy Anniversary to my
husband, Bob!

IT’S OUR SONG
It was a Saturday night date
The evening hour became late
As romance was our fate
Front row seats at night club
The stage performer was a sub
Singing Elvis songs as dubbed
“The Wonder of You” sang in melody
Suddenly my date is on bended knee
Bob asking;“Would you marry me?”
Wedding dreams soon came true
The reception first dance for us two
Our song “The Wonder of You”

SEALED WITH A KISS – SWAK
At eighteen I vacation away from home
On the road way free to roam
Pack luggage with best friend Marge
Destination was Florida at large
Mom's loving letters from home wrote
Writing "Swak" on her envelopes
Another love letter meant more to me
Sent by Bob, my husband to be
Bob's words of love spoke
"Marry Me?" - was all he wrote
